Christmas Luncheon, December 2, 2011
– Toronto Cricket Curling and Skating Club
.
The annual ITE Christmas luncheon and the section Annual General
Meeting (AGM) was held on December 2, 2011, at the Toronto Cricket
Curling and Skating Club. As usual, the event was a great success with
the maximum number of attendees registering!

Photo: The room was packed for our 2011 Christmas luncheon. Over
100 people attended!
This year had On-line Registration Option for the first time.
Approximately 50% of attendees registered online with our new
on-line payment tool! This new payment option will be available
for ITE Toronto events in the future and we encourage you to use this
option to help reduce registration time at the event.
Our speaker this year was Harvey Lowe from the City of Toronto - Social
Development Finance & Administration Division, Social Policy Analysis &
Research Section. Harvey gave us an overview of the new Wellbeing
Toronto website,
http://www.toronto.ca/wellbeing/. Wellbeing Toronto is a new
web-based measurement and visualization tool that helps evaluate
community wellbeing across the city's 140 neighbourhoods. Harvey
provided a real-time demonstration of how the new site works and the
type of data that can be accessed for FREE!
A big thank you goes to AECOM who provided two tickets to a Toronto
Maple Leafs game for the charity draw. The draw, which was won by
William Newmarch of BA Group, raised $240 for scholarships awarded by
CITE. The funds raised were matched by ITE Toronto Section for a
total contribution of $480!
At the end of the luncheon CITE district director Russell Brownlee and
CITE President Jeanette Montufar gave everyone a highly energetic update
on ITE activities at the international and national levels. Jeanette
also gave a preview of the upcoming 2012 CITE conference in Winnipeg
including testing the crowd with some of the trivia questions being
asked as part of the event marketing campaign.
Election for 2012 ITE Toronto Section

Project of the Year Award
from President Rahul Mehra (left) at the 2011 Christmas luncheon.
GENIVAR's Richmond Hill-Langstaff Urban Growth Centre (UGC)
Centre-Wide Transportation Study is a comprehensive study that focuses
on the planned Richmond Hill-Langstaff UGC, an infill community served
by five rapid transit lines and two major highways. It will be the
second highest densely populated area in the GTA at full build out, with
nearly 50,000 residents and 30,000 employees in an area of just 70
hectares, which presents a range of challenges in how to move people to,
from and within the community. GENIVAR's study recommendations
integrated development with a multimodal transportation strategy that
favours transit and active transportation and outlines the necessary
infrastructure for these modes. This strategy will be a key to the
success of the UGC.
ITE Toronto section congratulates GENIVAR on winning the first Project
of the Year award. Make sure you look for information on this year's
award competition when it comes out in a few months!

September 19th, the ITE Toronto Section was welcomed by TTC staff for a
tour of their Transit Control Centre. Approximately 15 section Members
and Non-Members were provided a behind the scenes look at how the
control centre operates. From above the operations floor, the tour
provided a view of operators, workstations, video walls, and much more.
In addition, our hosts presented an in-depth understanding of TTC
transit operations and the many challenges faced by TTC planning,
deployment and operations teams. A special thank-you to our tour guides
for allowing us to view the control centre and for answering all of the
group's questions!
Full Day Transportation Boot Camp & Evening
Social
Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
Ontario Bar Association (OBA) & The Bier Market, Toronto
.
On
Thursday June 23rd the Toronto Section hosted a ‘Transportation Boot
Camp’ at the Ontario Bar Association offices in downtown Toronto. The
Boot Camp provided attendees with an overview of six key practice areas
of transportation engineering. The intent was to provide a window for
people within the industry into other facets of transportation
engineering – topics that that they have not yet learned about, or don’t
experience as part of their day to day activities. A very special thank
you to our diverse group of speakers who donated their time to come and
speak to our group. The speakers and topics included:
•
Accident Reconstruction/Safety – Russell Brownlee, Giffin Koerth
•
Transportation Modelling – Loy Cheah, York Region
•
The Planning Process in Ontario - Mike Bissett, Bousfields Inc.
•
Transportation Impact Assessment and Parking – Andre Filippetti, City of
Toronto
•
Transit Planning & Operations – Tim Lawson, TTC
•
Municipal Road Projects – James Garland, Durham Region
The event was attended by approximately 20 people from both the public
and private sector backgrounds who were eager to learn about the
different facets of transportation engineering. The group was able to
listen to the speakers and engage them in a discussion on their various
topics which led to a very informative session!
After the Boot Camp, some of the speakers and the majority of the Boot
Camp participants joined members of the ITE Toronto Section executive
for a follow up discussion over cocktails at an evening social at the
Bier Market on the Esplanade in Toronto. The social was a very fun and
refreshing way to exchange the ideas learned earlier in the day!!
If you are interested in viewing the presentation material from the Boot
Camp, please click on the above links for each of the presentations.

2011 CITE Conference and Annual General
Meeting Halifax
May 29 to June 1, 2011
.
A great event, with great people! Compliments to the Halifax Local
Arrangements Committee (LAC) for putting on a great conference.
The ITE Toronto Section President, Rahul Mehra, was at the event on
behalf of the ITE Toronto Section. Rahul was part of the CITE Board of
Directors and participated in CITE Executive meetings. In addition, your
2011 Vice-President (Mark), Secretary (Nixon) and Student Chapter
Liaison (Matthew) attended the conference on behalf of the Toronto
Section Executives.
Matthew moderated the SimCap roundtable discussion during the conference
and received a lot of great suggestions and feedback for the first
Canadian SimCap User Group.

its advantages over microsimulation; and INRO followed this up with a
presentation on the Presidio parkway in San Francisco. New features
being developed for EMME were discussed especially the new command
interface. It was an excellent session and well attending by both
members from the consulting industry and government agencies.
ITE Toronto Spring Luncheon
April 29, 2011
.
The
Annual ITE Toronto Spring Luncheon was held on Friday, April 29th 2011
in Markham. This year featured a couple firsts for us in the Toronto
Section. For the first time, the Spring Luncheon was held in Markham at
the Holiday Inn at Woodbine / Steeles. The venue was moved to a more
central location for the convenience to attract more participants. The
Spring Luncheon was also the first time we were able to catch a glimpse
of the new Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle, thanks to our guest speaker
Matt Crossley from General Motors of Canada. Matt spent 20 minutes
giving a presentation on the Volt and its capabilities, which is likely
a window into the future of automotive technology given the current gas
prices.

After the presentation there was so much interest in the Volt that
the question period had to be cut short so that lunch could be served.

After lunch our ITE District Director, Russell Brownlee, also gave a
brief presentation letting everyone know what is going on with ITE at
the international level.
ITE Toronto Section would like to thank Matt Crossley of GM and all the
professionals who attended the Spring Luncheon in the new location for
making it a big success!

Murray McLobbie’s Toronto
Pub Crawl and Sightseeing Tour
Thursday, March 10, 2011
.
ITE
Toronto Section was thrilled to host a pub crawl and social event for
Murray McLobbie, the 2011 CITE Conference’s mascot! Murray is visiting
Toronto on his way to Halifax and ITE Toronto wanted to take some time
to show him around town and have him meet some of our members. Murray
was treated with a trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame before meeting up
with a bunch of ITE’ers at a local pub where we all got a chance to
socialize with Murray for a couple hours.
After leaving the first pub the group showed Murray Union Station, where
Murray got to see GO Trains, and Canada’s first subway line! From there
it was onto Air Canada Centre where Murray tried to sneak into a Leafs
game that was going on. Unfortunately security didn’t appreciate his
trying to avoid paying those ridiculous Leaf ticket prices!

After smooth talking his way out of the situation Murray and the ITE’ers
took a walk around the Rogers Centre, CN Tower, and the Roundhouse where
Murray got to see an actual steam locomotive at the Toronto Railway
Heritage Centre! We wrapped up the evening at another pub where we said
our goodbyes to Murray and wished him well on his travels!

Successful Breakfast Seminar at
YRT/Viva Transit Operations Centre
.
There
was standing room only at our first ITE Toronto Section event of 2011,
where almost 50 ITE members gathered to learn more about transit
operations in York Region. The breakfast seminar was held at the York

Leafs game for the charity draw. The draw, which was won by Tom Woodhall
of BA Group, raised $115 for scholarships awarded by CITE.
The funds raised were matched by ITE Toronto Section for a total
contribution of $230!
At
the end of the luncheon CITE district director Russell Brownlee and CITE
President Gene Chartier gave everyone a quick update on ITE activities
at the international and national levels. Gene also gave a preview of
the upcoming 2011 CITE conference in Halifax including entertaining the
crowd with stories and pictures of his travels with Murray McLobby, the
official mascot of the 2011 Halifax Conference.
During the AGM component of the luncheon two new representatives were
elected to the Toronto Executive. Hossein Zarei from AECOM will become
the Membership Coordinator and Sean Nix of the Region of Peel will
become Activities Coordinator for 2011. CITE President Gene Chartier

Recap of Durham Region Traffic Operations Center Visit
Tuesday, October 5, 2010, 101 Consumers Drive, Whitby
.
The Toronto Section hosted a tour of the
Durham Region Central Traffic Control Centre on Tuesday, October 5,
2010, at 101 Consumers Drive, Whitby. The Region of Durham Works
Department operates a highly sophisticated computer
program that
controls over 500 signals in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and
Clarington. A Centralized Traffic Control System allows multiple traffic
control signals to communicate with a central computer so that
incidents, such as changes in traffic
patterns or signal
failures, can be quickly identified and managed.
This breakfast event was free and included a continental breakfast,
a tour of the Durham Region Central Traffic Control Centre, and a
presentation by Durham Region Operations staff. Special thanks to Bob
Szwarz and his team for hosting ITE Toronto Section.
